The Prettys are a rock and roll band from Vancouver Canada. Formed in 2013 by Code Andrusko, Pierce Kingan and Josh Gatien, their sound was first described by Pitchfork as “glammy power pop”. The band’s catalogue is highly eclectic; partly because the three founding members equally share writing and singing duties. Their unique inspirations and individual tales come through on each song, maturing sonically through the albums. Empty Heads, the band’s first full-length, was released independently in early 2015. Produced by Vancouver’s Felix Fung (Mode Modern, Dead Ghosts, Chains of Love), the album was the band’s most lo-fi and heaviest to date. It received resounding local praise and was mentioned in Pitchfork’s Shake Appeal 2015 music round-up. That summer the band did a run of shows down the U.S West Coast. The next year saw the release of the their sophomore album, Soirée, also recorded and produced by Felix Fung. The album’s more refined and poppy sounds were backed up by a run of self-made music videos, helping establish the bands online presence. The album also featured the addition of saxophonist Matty Reed and drummer Ian Browne (Matthew Good Band, No Sinner), helping to further develop the band’s sound. After a busy year supporting touring acts in Vancouver (King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, The Garden, Together Pangea ), and playing local headlining shows, The Prettys travelled to Rifflandia Festival in Victoria BC in September 2016. January 2018 saw the addition of new drummer Luke Basso, and the band is currently recording their third full-length album entitled Tapas. Along with several scheduled Canadian festival appearances there are also plans for a North American summer tour. The band also hopes to do a small tour of Australia or Europe in late 2018/early 2019, bringing their sound to new audiences and geographies.
