Ewk Hiyah Hozdli
Cody Merrimen and Molly Wickham from the group Ewk Hiyah Hozdli have invited 4 musicians from around Canada to join them in collaborating on traditional drum and dance pieces in a 4 day residency on unceded Gidimt’en territory. This residency will culminate in a live performance at the festival on Friday June 5th at 9pm.
Ora Cogan from Victoria and iskwē from Winnipeg will be providing vocal support, while Nick Schofield from Montreal will be creating ambient soundscapes from samples taken from Gidimt’en territory, and Juno award winning Ben Brown from Vancouver will be drumming with the ensemble.
This project is meant to bring cultures together to celebrate the universal language of music while also learning about the history of the Wet’suwet’en people through musical collaboration. Ewk Hiyah Hozdli have provided deeply meaningful music to Midsummer audiences for years and this collaboration is meant to celebrate the beautiful contributions of the Wet’suwet’en people to the cultural and artistic communities within Gidimt’en territory and beyond.
Thank you Cody and Molly for all that you do.
